Jay Rao: "There is more hunger in Chilean companies for innovation"

A drag on productivity in Chile in recent years has acted as an alarm for a growing number of companies in adopting innovation as a way to continue growing, says Dr. Jay Rao, Professor of Strategy and Innovation at Babson College.
"I think (the Chilean companies) have more appetite for innovation around because they had a wake up call. From 2000 to 2010, productivity was stagnant, Chile did not grow. If the country had grown at the same rate it did from 1985 to 2000 would have been as rich today as Finland, "says Rao.
"This is a warning that says not to invest in knowledge, not invested in learning about people," said the teacher, step in Santiago where he gave a speech, adding that no one can be a economy knowledge if they still think only in mining, agriculture and services.
"If you want to be as rich as a developed nation, as a knowledge economy, you have to invest in knowledge and not in services. The percentage that the government invests in knowledge has been increasing, but as a percentage of GDP has grown. Innovation is knowledge, productivity is knowledge, so that Chile has to invest in that, large companies have to invest in that, "he says.
The task for business leaders is to create an environment where their teams can be naturally creative, Rao says, noting, not the ideas that lead to innovation, but a culture in an organization that promotes it.
rescue Example
There are two logical to the future: predictive variables help with knowledge and creativity, as in the first part of the recent rescue of miners trapped in a mine near Copiapo.
"The logic is very useful predictive control of costs, compared to known variables, but not very useful innovation. Consider the case of the miners themselves. How to know where were they? At first no one knew, so attempted three different holes, not knowing what would be successful.
